4-52-8. H. Poincaré à Sophus Lie

Mon cher Collègue,

La Section de géométrie est d’accord pour proposer votre nom au choix de l’Académie des sciences pour la place de correspondant devenue vacante par la mort de Kronecker.22endnote: 2 Leopold Kronecker died in Berlin on 29 December 1891, liberating the position of Correspondent he had held at the Paris Academy of Sciences since 1868. The geometry section considered as potential successors Rudolf Lipschitz, Luigi Cremona, Felix Klein and Lazarus Fuchs, but preferred Sophus Lie, according to a letter from Hermite to Mittag-Leffler of 18 Feb. 1892 (Dugac, 1989b, 2). Lie was duly elected on 7 June, 1892 (Institut de France, 1968).

See Lie to Poincaré, ca. March 1892 (§ 4-52-7), concerning corrections to the text of his note for the Comptes rendus on the foundations of geometry, communicated by Poincaré to the Paris Academy of Sciences on 29 Feb. 1892 (Lie, 1892).
