4-79-2. James Joseph Sylvester to H. Poincaré

[After 13 January 1886]

New College — Oxford

Dear M. Poincaré,

On arriving here I found your valued memoirs. The stupidity of my servant is my sole excuse for the needless trouble which I have occasioned you.

I wrote to him to forward to me in London all memoirs coming from abroad. He sent me several packages but yours was not among them and I therefore concluded that they had not arrived.

I hope to derive much profit from the study of them and with my best thanks and renewed apologies, remain my dear Sir,

Yours most truly,

J. J. Sylvester
