4-36-45. H. Poincaré à Giovanni Battista Guccia

Lundi matin [27.04.1908]11endnote: 1 The letter bears two annotations in Guccia’s hand: “Paris 27/4/08” and “Risp. 2/5/08 — G.”

Mon cher ami,

The brochure in question most likely contained Poincaré’s communication to the Rome meeting of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), published in the Rendiconti di Palermo. Poincaré’s paper was read by Darboux during the plenary session of the ICM in Rome on 10 April, 1908. According to a note inserted by the editorial board of the Rendiconti, sometime prior to this lecture, a brochure was published “with the aid and support of the Mathematical Circle of Palermo”. In the same note, the board acknowledged that Darboux agreed to read Poincaré’s paper at the ICM, “following an indisposition” preventing Poincaré from delivering the speech himself (Poincaré, 1908, 152 note 1). Given that Guccia received Poincaré’s letter and corrected text on 2 May, 1908, he had at least three days to insert Poincaré’s corrections, as Poincaré’s text was printed for the Rendiconti on 5 May, 1908.
