À M. Henry Poincaré Membre de l’Institut à Paris
Monsieur,
Je vous annonce avec le plus grand plaisir que dans sa séance publique d’aujourd’hui, l’Académie Royale des Sciences vous a conféré à l’unanimité pour votre oeuvre mathématique épocale le Prix et la Médaille Bolyai, fondés à la mémoire de Jean et Farkas Bolyai et décernés aujourd’hui pour la première fois.22endnote: 2 The award of the Bolyai Prize to Poincaré by the Royal Hungarian Academy of Sciences, presided by Albert Berzeviczy, followed the decision by a four-member jury, composed of two members of the Hungarian Academy, Gyula König et Gusztáv Rados, and two external members, Felix Klein and Gaston Darboux. The jury met in Budapest on the 12th and 13th of October, 1905, and decided in favor of Poincaré over a colleague of Klein’s in Göttingen, David Hilbert. Poincaré, informed by Darboux of the jury’s decision, wrote Klein to thank him for his support (§ 4-42-39). Klein was charged with writing the jury report, but he abandoned the task after several months, after having asked Poincaré to provide him with offprints of his papers. On 6 June, 1906, Klein wrote to Poincaré to return the offprints, and explain his decision to abandon writing the report (§ 4-42-40).
