April 8/89

American Journal of Mathematics, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.

Dear Monsieur Poincaré,

Accept my most sincere congratulations for your success in gaining the King Oscar prize, and my thanks for your memoir just received. I will publish it as soon as possible.11endnote: 1 Poincaré had asked Craig to notify him upon arrival of his manuscript; see Poincaré to Craig, 22 March 1889 (§ 4-22-31). The manuscript was published the following year (Poincaré 1890). I was greatly pleased to learn that the two prizes went to Paris and to two friends.22endnote: 2 The memoir submitted by Poincaré’s Sorbonne colleague Paul Appell was awarded a medal by the prize committee.

Yours very sincerely,

Thomas Craig
