4-36-14. H. Poincaré à Giovanni Battista Guccia

[Ca. 18.03.1901]11endnote: 1 The manuscript bears Guccia’s annotation: “Risp. 19/3/01”.

Mon cher ami,

J’ai commencé le mémoire que je vous avais promis; mais je vois qu’il faudra pour le terminer plus de temps que je n’avais cru d’abord.22endnote: 2 See Poincaré to Guccia, ca. 14 Feb., 1901 (§ 4-36-11), and Poincaré (1901).

Je me décide donc à vous faire envoyer d’abord le mémoire d’un de mes élèves sur les invariants intégraux, mémoire dont je vous avais déjà parlé.33endnote: 3 Donder (1901, 1902). The manuscript was received at the editorial office of the Rendiconti on 17 March, 1901; see Poincaré’s cover letter (§ 4-36-13).

Rien n’est changé à notre itinéraire; j’espère que la grève de Marseille ne mettra pas obstacle à notre voyage.44endnote: 4 Guccia had asked Poincaré to alert him in case the itinerary changed for his trip to Palermo; see Guccia to Poincaré, 16 Feb., 1901 (§ 4-36-12). The port of Marseille employed close to five thousand dockworkers at the turn of the twentieth century, and played a key role in trade with French colonies in northern Africa. From 1900 to 1913, strikes were frequent. The longshoremen’s union launched eighty-four strikes in this period, including a 40-day strike in early 1901 (Barrau, 1972).

Votre ami dévoué,

Poincaré
